Unlike many spas and centers of relaxation that can exist in a variety of climates and ecologies, the opportunity for onsen only presents itself where the waters are right. In general, these sites are found in areas of volcanic activity. With both east and west volcanic belts, japanese soil presents countless possibilities for authentic onsen to exist. It is estimated that over 20,000 thermal springs exist throughout Japan. The temperature of water in an onsen bath ranges from 80-110 degrees and must have a composition of total dissolved solids (TDS) exceeding 1,000 milligrams per liter. The mineral contents of onsen are also specifically identified and taken very seriously. The waters are regularly inspected by the Japanese government, and in the changing room of each onsen a summary of the water analysis is displayed highlighting the ailments which those specific waters are believed to most effectively alliviate. Some common conditions that onsen offer physical relief from include arthritis, skin disease, rheumatism and nervous disorders.
